Poison Ivy? Are You Kidding Me?

Yeah, yeah, it's me. Don't act so surprised. I, myself, almost slid off the chair when the doctor broke the news. I swear my mouth hung open for a fraction of a minute. Excuse me, please.

No, I don't go walking brushing my legs against any plant. What, no, no, I don't go hugging trees. No, the last time I went hiking was 8 years ago, and all I encountered were bloodsuckers (no less horrid, of course.) And, no, DOCTOR, I don't live in the woods.

So what in the world? I thought it was those creepy bugs.

No, Cherie (and here he touched my legs for emphasis), see here (peering through his glasses), this is characteristic of poison ivy (and he droned on as to WHAT it would have looked like if it was NOT). Do you have any on your wrist?

No, but (I showed him my right forearm), I did start itching here (the telltale dots were there), and I used some Hydrocortisone.

(I had earlier told the nurse when she did my vitals that I had been pumping my ever-reliable tried-and-true Hydrocortisone tube for the past two days to no avail, and so as a last act of desperation, I was there for a prescription for Prednisone.)

The doctor now says, I will put you on Prednisone for 10 days.

Please, doctor, because I am ready to hang myself - the itch is driving me crazy.

I've been home since, thank God, sheltered inside these walls, vowing to do splits and fly if I have to to avoid anything green, and screaming bloody Mary to the kids to keep their shoes outside.

Hallelujah.

oh yes Che, why did you get poison ivy? like what you said, you went hiking 8 years ago. i go hiking every week and been always in the greens but thankfully did not get any poison ivy, but i have poison ivy lotion among other first aid remedies always in my pack just in case. though i don't cross the greens especially the leaves that come with threes.

i hope you feel better.

" betchai, what's with leaves that comes in threes?"

=== hi Ayie, in hiking, we have this quote, " leaves of threes, leave them be". the poison ivy has three leaves in a triangular pattern, not all leaves of threes are poisonous, but since it is hard to tell, leave them be :)

Che, hope you feel better. thanks, we do take precautions when we hike, we have the first aid kit in our backpack just in case, thankfully, na-e-expire lang laman nang kit, hindi namin nagagamit :) we just replace it with new ones again :)

cherie said...

that's good na nag-e-expire na lang sila, beth. thank you for the "leaves of threes" bit - it's very useful knowledge, oh boy.

" leaves of threes, leave them be". What a saying. I shall pay some attentions on this during my next hiking. It looks interesting.
Usually I take only pictures without touching or plucking any. I do no harm to them, they must be the same to me.

oh, hi, rainfield, thanks for the blog hop. i linked your blog to mine - i need all the motivation (yours and betchai's) to pen some nature-inspired posts...

glad you share that...i am more amused with 3 leaves coz it looks good. I could've been poisoned all along hiking! hahaha! Good thing I don't really hike! But nice to know at least i can be cautious even just around greens.

thanks betchai!

that's good, it's really irritating when you have all that itchy thing.

Diane AZ said...

I have never seen poison ivy, maybe because I live in the desert. I hope the itching has stopped and you feel better now. :)

cherie said...

it has, and i do! thanks, ayie! i NEVER imagined i'd get one myself, haha
